The Depreciation Guild ‘Butterfly Kisses’
If good looks was a minute/ You know that you could've been an hour- Smokey Robinson, 'The Way You Do The Things You Do'
Butterfly Kisses by The Depreciation Guild
First off, this is not the crappy ‘country’ song which drove anyone with a radio signal in the late ’90s to want to wrap their car around a pole. I give this band credit for even choosing this title. As a Brooklyn band, though, they are most likely only vaguely aware that there is a state called Nebraska, let alone have any idea what country is. The Depreciation Guild’s press state that they’ve built their music from 8-bit Nintendo soundtracks. I hope that’s not what they’re trying to market this band as, because this song is much better than any pure novelty. Breathless ’80s vocals, driving drums, and big, spacy synth lines make for the kind of pop delight to which you could swear that you roller skated as a child. I know I’ve stated more than once my frustration at the constant rehashing of ’80s sounds, but when it’s done with sincerity and not for ironic kicks it can still make you skip.
