If good looks was a minute/ You know that you could've been an hour- Smokey Robinson, 'The Way You Do The Things You Do'

Anybody who considers themselves to be a ‘Child of the 80’s’ has no doubt noticed the trend of their cherished after-school cartoons appearing on the big screen. Considering that they’ve already made movies out of video games (Mortal Kombat, Mario Brothers), Disneyland rides (Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Mansion) and Pauley Shore screenplays (Son-in-Law, Encino Man), films based on cartoons, based on toys would seem like a logical next step. First was 2007’s Transformers, followed by this summer’s sequel, Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen,  and finally GI JOE: The Rise of Cobra which will be released tomorrow.  When I heard that Hollywood was making GI JOE,  I said to myself, “What’s next?…a Thundercats movie?” Apparently, somebody beat me to the punch. The following is a “Fan-Made trailer for a Thundercats movie that has does not exist:

‘Don’t Look Back’ @ NU’s Block Museum Of Art 3/12

Posted on Thursday, March 12, 2009 in Shambollocks Outing

Come to my hometown of Evanston on Thursday, March 12 and watch D.A. Pennebaker’s celebrated 1967 documentary on Bob Dylan, Don’t Look Back. The film famously captures the years ‘65 and ‘66, when Dylan went from folkie icon to full-fledged rock star. Ray-Bay sunglasses are suggested, but not required.

What: Don’t Look Back

Where: Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art

When: 8 PM March 12th

Who: Anybody and everybody

Register after the jump.

Fanboys 2/6/09 at Pipers Alley

Posted on Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Shambollocks Outing

The third Shambollocks! outing went OK last Friday night. If you weren’t there, you missed cocktails with myself, Mr. Furious, and our good friend Marv. I would give this outing a C+. The inaugaration event earned an F. The first event I’d give an A-. Overall, the events will continue to get better. We will have another event later this month.

As for Fanboys, if you’re a Star Wars fan (and if you’re at this site I’m assuming you are) you’ll enjoy it. I give it a three out of four stars. It’s an old-fashioned road trip movie, and within that genre it didn’t reinvent the wheel. It was not laugh until you hurt at any moment, but it kept a smile on your face. Kudos for not making it sappy at the end. And for not including any George Lucas cameo.

Afterward, we went to Delilah’s, the best bar on the North Side. Much whiskey and beer was drank. If you noticed no postings this weekend, it’s because I suffered from a gran mal hangover on Saturday. I will make up over the week.  No photos from the event because, well, it was a movie. What do you photograph?

Star Wars, To A Newbie

Posted on Friday, January 16, 2009 in Star Wars

Star Wars: Retold (by someone who hasn’t seen it) from Joe Nicolosi on Vimeo.

I post this not because it isn’t amusing. It is. I post it because this is very much like how my life is. As most of you know, I love the original Star Wars with the passion of five hundred or so suns. If I needed a work of art to define me, I would probably choose those films. Having said this, you think my wife would at least understand the films, right?

No. K couldn’t even explain the films better than this woman did. Not only that, she has no real interest in understanding them. Complete and total willful ignorance.

It upsets me. It does. First, because someone in our generation should know Star Wars on a functional level, if just to get any of a slew of references which, if you live with me, happen on a near daily basis. Second, they are undeniable great films that changed cinema. Third, they’re readily available. K knows where they are. Right next to the couch.

[Groan]

As for myself, I feign Oscar-worthy interest in lots of things. Capris. Cousins. Co-workers. All I’m asking is reciprocity.

So watch Star Wars already! All of you.
