Anybody who considers themselves to be a ‘Child of the 80’s’ has no doubt noticed the trend of their cherished after-school cartoons appearing on the big screen. Considering that they’ve already made movies out of video games (Mortal Kombat, Mario Brothers), Disneyland rides (Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Mansion) and Pauley Shore screenplays (Son-in-Law, Encino Man), films based on cartoons, based on toys would seem like a logical next step. First was 2007’s Transformers, followed by this summer’s sequel, Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and finally GI JOE: The Rise of Cobra which will be released tomorrow. When I heard that Hollywood was making GI JOE, I said to myself, “What’s next?…a Thundercats movie?” Apparently, somebody beat me to the punch. The following is a “Fan-Made trailer for a Thundercats movie that has does not exist:

Did you catch all of the films they borrowed? My favorite reference would have to be the troop transport from 1987’s Aliens used to represent the Thundertank. I guess what amazed me the most was the meticulous detail that must have gone into producing this. Not only did the author have to sync up countless clips for audio (music and dialogue) and visuals, but he had to hand-draw all of the ThunderCat makeup on every single actor for every second they wear on screen. While a part of me is jealous for not having thought of this idea first, the rest of me is glad that I don’t own any movie-editing software.

**I only have one tiny problem with the trailer. When I was a kid, I always pictured the mighty Panthro as a black guy. So while I think Vin Diesel is an inspired choice to play the Thundercats’ resident mechanic, I can’t help but wonder what the role would be in the hands of someone like…oh I don’t know…Samuel Jackson. Oh well.
